...When Matuszewski fills in the map for us, we trace not simply the outlines of our known world, but layer upon layer of undiscovered territory. With her images, Matuszewski’s grids become a sort of spirit map, revealing for us the shifting landmass of our own subconscious. Her continents are the stuff of dreams, objects out of memory: A collection of jars without a shelf, a child’s shoe, an empty birdcage in a basement window. Symbolic or real, these objects, floating outside of normal time and space, appear like mileposts approaching ghostlike from a fog. Charting a country most of us travel only in sleep, Matuszewski’s works remind us that we are each explorers, willing or not, on a solitary trek to discover our own souls.
